The Bridge is a reading series devoted to literary translation. It aims to promote literature in translation by serving as a venue for readings by well-established and emerging translators and authors. This time, Jonathan Cohen joins us to discuss his work translating from the Spanish. Jonathan Cohen is an award-winning translator of Latin American poetry and scholar of inter-American literature. He has translated Ernesto Cardenal, Enrique Lihn, Pedro Mir, and Roque Dalton, among others. He is also the author of pioneering critical works on Pablo Neruda and Muna Lee. In the Bridge Series, he'll be speaking about William Carlos Williams's translations of Latin American and Spanish poetry, which Cohen recently compiled and edited in the book By Word of Mouth (New Directions). We are pleased to present a special event featuring one of the most widely read poets of our time, Billy Collins—author, most recently, of the book Horoscopes for the Dead, a smart, lyrical, funny and touching collection from America’s most popular poet.

Billy Collins’ poetry collections include, Questions About Angels, The Art of Drowning, Picnic, Lightning, Taking Off Emily Dickinson’s Clothes, Sailing Alone Around the Room: New & Selected Poems, Nine Horses, and The Trouble With Poetry and Other Poems. He is editor of two anthologies of contemporary poetry: Poetry 180: A Turning Back to Poetry and 180 More: Extraordinary Poems for Every Day. Among his honors are fellowships from the New York Foundation for the Arts, the National Endowment for the Arts, and the Guggenheim Foundation. In October 2004, Collins was selected as the inaugural recipient of the Poetry Foundation’s Mark Twain Award for humor in poetry. Collins has been a writer-in-residence at Sarah Lawrence College and served as a Literary Lion of the New York Public Library. He is a Distinguished Professor of English at Lehman College, City University of New York, where he has taught for the past 30 years. In June 2001, Billy Collins was appointed United States Poet Laureate (2001-2003). In January 2004, he was named New York State Poet Laureate 2004-06.

BERLIN STORIES by Robert Walser

In 1905 the young Swiss writer Robert Walser arrived in Berlin to join his older brother Karl, already an important stage-set designer, and immediately threw himself into the vibrant social and cultural life of the city. Berlin Stories collects his alternately celebratory, droll, and satirical observations on every aspect of the bustling German capital, from its theaters, cabarets, painters’ galleries, and literary salons, to the metropolitan street, markets, the Tiergarten, rapid-service restaurants, and the electric tram. Originally appearing in literary magazines as well as the feuilleton sections of newspapers, the early stories are characterized by a joyous urgency and the generosity of an unconventional guide. Later pieces take the form of more personal reflections on the writing process, memories, and character studies. All are full of counter-intuitive images and vignettes of startling clarity, showcasing a unique talent for whom no detail was trivial, at grips with a city diving headlong into modernity.

Award-winning translator Susan Bernofsky reads the English translation of one of her favorite subjects, Robert Walser. Bernofsky is the translator of six books by Robert Walser and is currently working on a biography of the late Swiss author.

Join us for an evening of tribute to legendary editor, translator and publisher, Richard Seaver.

Richard Seaver was at the center of literary life in 1950s Paris, establishing the magazine Merlin, and publishing Eugene Ionesco and Jean Genet. He championed Samuel Beckett in an essay that got the attention of Barney Rosset, the editor of Grove Press, which helped bring Beckett to American audiences. It also got Seaver a job at Grove. The book follows Seaver from Paris to New York when, as a top editor at Grove Press in the 1960s, he went on to publish books with content that challenged censorship laws— including William S. Burroughs' Naked Lunch, Henry Miller's Tropic of Cancer and Tropic of Capricorn Son; and the French erotic novel The Story of O, written under a pseudonym. Seaver died in 2009 and The Tender Hour of Twilight is his memoir, condensed by his wife from 900 pages of notes he wrote over the course of his life.
