Victor LaValle is the award-winning author of the novels The Ecstatic and Big Machine (which he read at Greenlight), and a collection of short stories, Slapboxing with Jesus. His new novel The Devil In Silver brings together the themes present in all of LaValle’s fiction: faith, class, madness, and our relationship with the unseen and the uncanny. It is also a horror story with a grotesque monster, an expose of bureaucracies and healthcare, a story of friendships in the most unlikely of circumstances, and an exploration of the real versus the imagined, the truth versus the system. Victor discusses the novel and these compelling themes with like-minded author Kelly Link, founder of the literary journal Lady Churchill’s Rosebud Wristlet and the publisher Small Beer Press, as well as the author of the surreal and magical story collections Stranger Things Happen, Magic for Beginners and Pretty Monsters.

Amy Thielen will have an event at Greenlight Bookstore in Brooklyn, NY on Monday, May 15th at 7:30 PM for her memoir Give a Girl a Knife, which is out from Clarkson Potter in May 2017. Amy will be in conversation with Matt Wieland.

Before Amy Thielen was the host of the James Beard-nominated Heartland Table on the Food Network, and before her richly woven cookbook The New Midwestern Table was chosen as one of Food & Wine’s best of the year, and before she was cooking in some of New York City’s finest kitchens—for chefs David Bouley, Daniel Boulud, and Jean-Georges Vongerichten—she grew up in a northern Minnesota town: home to the nation's largest French fry factory, the headwaters of the fast food nation, inspired by the cooking of her mother and grandmother. Her literary debut "Give a Girl a Knife" is a food memoir, a pulsing coming-of-age story, a vivid view into New York’s high-end restaurants and ultimately a journey toward home.
